Our fearless leader has been away for a few months while he underwent repairs. The hole in our shop caused by his absence, and the missing vintage cars from his collection, have caused some concern amongst our friends and customers.
We're happy to say - HE'S BACK!

At Downtown Tire Brake & Muffler, our skilled technicians have years of experience in the auto repair industry. We love the classics (hey, we're vintage too!) but we'll work on your newer domestic and imported vehicles to get you from A to B safely.
Not just regular vehicle maintenance and tire care from flat repair to new tires and rims; we can replace your brakes and repair your exhaust - or put in a custom exhaust designed by our experienced technician in consultation with you.

So you've just got yourself that boss truck you've been wanting for years. Or a classic showpiece (welcome to the money pit - we're in here too!). Or even a zippy new sports car. Whatever you've got, once you know it's a keeper the fun begins. Upgrading the suspension, new rims...and making it sound the way it does in your head. Whether you just want to stealth through the neighbourhood or rattle windows three doors down Lance can make it happen. From manifold/headers to new tips, a custom exhaust uniquely says "This is Mine".
Lance has been building and repairing exhausts for more than a quarter century. One of the last of the real welders who can bend pipe to fit instead of just using a prefab part, he'll consult with you so it looks and sounds amazing. Perfectionist, artist as well as artisan, once you see one of his builds you'll understand why we've become the go-to place for custom exhausts!

Tires - they're black, round and go under the vehicle.
Every now and then they have to be replaced, repaired or (because we live in Canada) changed.
We do all that.
Need new tires? We have access to an extensive selection to fit your needs from budget to name brand and specialty racing tires.
Want new wheels? We'll work with you to find what will suit your "look".
In addition...
New tires we sell get no-charge flat repairs plus front to back rotations for the life of the tires to keep your rubber on the road longer.

Taken your low profile tires to shops and been turned away?
Bring 'em on.
If your sidewall measurement only shows 25, 30 or 35 many shops don't know how to mount without damage to the tire or rim. You'll never be able to unsee that tiny chip!
Our Senior Tire Technician, Erv, has seen it all - from crazy low profiles to tires so big a child could hide inside them. With almost 40 years of experience mounting, balancing and installing you can feel comfortable bringing him your precious (expensive) mags/alloys or your custom painted wheels.
Experience matters. Happy customers prove it.

This beautiful 1967 Chevy II Nova is proudly featured on our logo.
The prized possession of our owner, Gary Arens, he's never gotten around to giving me it's bio. When asked he just laughs...

This is Rayah - our much loved shop dog.
She's a 4 year old Corgi who's grown up here hanging out with customers, demanding playtime from all and graciously accepting treats. She likes car rides, chasing pigeons and destroying stuffies.
We know who really runs the shop.

George is no longer a puppy!
Still a loving little guy, he decided he liked hanging out at home more than being a Shop Dog.
He's still part of our family so here's a new picture for everyone to see

No, we do not offer towing services. However, we can recommend a trusted local towing company if you need assistance.
Rotors and pads should be replaced together to optimize the contact the pad has with the surface of the rotor. If there is any rust, grooving or hot spots on the old rotor your new pads won't have 100% of the braking power - something you always want! Your pads and rotors should wear as a set to provide the best service.
We can do a "pad slap" (we understand the budget can be tight) but it's not the best option.
Tires come with a date of manufacture on them - it's in that mess of embossed numbers and letters on the sidewall. Once they get to be 5 years old, no matter how much tread they have on them, they should be replaced. After 5 years the rubber compounds start to break down. This leads to cracks, bulging and separation. as well as dry rot. The aging might not be visible right away - but it's there and it'll show up sooner rather than later.
There are a couple of common reasons we can't fix your tire.
One is when it's a puncture in the sidewall, or too close to the sidewall. Tires are built so that the strength is all in the tread area - the sidewall provides flexibility. If we try to stick a patch to the sidewall area the constant flexing, and the heat generated from that, will prevent the patch from sticking. With luck the repair attempt will let the air out gently, most times it pops off and you risk a blowout.
The second reason we can't fix your tire is when it's "run flat". Not the same as a Run Flat tire, this is when a tire has been driven with low air in it - the sidewall has folded and ground against the rim. Usually there's a pile of black "dust" inside the tire from the abraded interior. Once again- the sidewall has been damaged and the tire is toast.
When you call to order tires, one of the first questions is "what size".
On the side of the tire is a set of digits that'll look something like this:
P215/60R18 (your digits may be different)
P, or LT if you've got a truck, stands for Passenger Vehicle rated. LT represents Light Truck rated (yes you have a Super Duty truck...doesn't matter, it's still LT). It refers to the load rating, number of plies and overall strength of the tire.
215 is the distance across the tread in mm.
60 is the sidewall - it's a percentage of the tread. 60 indicates 60% of the tread width.
R18 is the diameter of the rim.
Some off road or truck tires may be listed using different notation ie., 35x12.50R18. These are known as "flotation" tires where the common measurement is "metric". They're just a different way to measure larger tires and offer a bit more flexibility in sizing for aftermarket rims.
